Porthleven Arts Festival will go ahead this year after receiving a significant financial boost from the National Lottery’s Community Fund.
The Festival, launched during lockdown in 2021, was initiated by a group of supportive residents to celebrate the local creative community. Following the philosophy and backing of Trevor Osborne of the Porthleven Harbour & Dock Company, an inaugural event took place last September and a 10 day celebration of the arts in many diverse forms will again take place throughout Porthleven this autumn. It is anticipated that this will become an annual fixture in the Village’s busy and popular events calendar.
Now the Porthleven Arts Community (PAC), a voluntary-run CIC responsible for organising the Festival, has secured a grant of £9,800 through the Community Fund scheme run by the National Lottery. Festival Coordinator, Alec Short, said: “It is brilliant news for the Festival and we are all really pleased to get plans in motion to make the 2022 Festival even better than the last.”
This financial boost will help the PAC ensure a packed 9 day festival running from Saturday, 24 September until Sunday, 2 October.
Last year’s highlights saw live musical and dance performances, workshops, tutorials, exhibitions and film showings which highlighted the wide-ranging and diverse creative talents across the Village and beyond. A particular highlight was the pod of Mermaids which will be making a much-anticipated return for the 2022 Festival.
Jenna Sobey, a Director of the PAC, said: “What is different about this Festival, is that it is held across the whole Village in already existing buildings instead of one purpose-built marquee for example. We hope that people will travel all around Village to see all this year’s programme will have to offer.
The events will encompass many forms of artistic endeavour, from painting to the performing arts, and we are really excited to see it come to life and for people across our community to come together and celebrate the huge wave of creative talent we have here. It is joy to see and be involved with and we are really looking forward to building on the success of 2021.”
The PAC are keen to get more people involved in the organisation this year. If you would like to be part of the Festival in any way, they would love to hear from you. Please visit our website for further information, and you can email info@porthlevenarts.com to register your interest.
