Writing about the sea workshop for ages 11+
October 2, 2021 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Elspeth Stevenson’s novel for older children, Seal/Girl, tells the story of Gorran, a 12 year-old boy from Porthleven. Living with a parent who is often sad isn’t easy, but he knows he can count on Tick and Grace to keep him cheerful.
When the spring brings a giant storm, a life-changing accident and a chance meeting with a girl in a soft grey coat embroil the three friends in a race to save a hidden world from ecological disaster. Join the author for a practical creative writing workshop that draws on the environment, the sea and mythology.
-Find out how the author combined a sense of place, experience of nature and a childhood fascination with selkie mythology to develop the plot and characters in Seal/Girl
-Try out some short exercises to jump-start your creativity, perhaps even coming away with ideas for longer term projects -Learn how you can use objects found in your environment to stimulate the creative process
-Write a piece of flash fiction based on your own ideas from the workshop or a writing prompt
-Share your work (if you feel brave enough!) and get feedback, either on the day or afterwards
